Do You Know... Regular exercise can help to reduce risk for hearing loss and falls? Research suggests being overweight increases risk for permanent hearing loss and that regular physical activity could reduce that risk. Researchers have yet to pinpoint the exact link between obesity hearing loss, but it is thought that fatty deposits in the blood vessels may reduce blood supply to the ear, effectively damaging inner ear hair cells. When those tiny hair cells die, they are not replaced. Getting active may help prevent or delay the progression of hearing loss. A link also exists between hearing loss, falls and exercise. You may be aware that our risk of falling increases as we age. Are you aware of the fact that this risk skyrockets with increasing degree of hearing loss? Exercise that helps to strengthen the core such as pilates, weight training and Tai Chi can help to improve balance and reduce body fat, in turn reducing our risk of falls and hearing loss. And that walking just 2 hours each week has also been shown to reduce risk. So get out there and get active. Protect your hearing, protect yourself from falls and enjoy all of the health benefits a regular exercise regimen has to offer. What steps will you take to protect your hearing and balance health today?
